The National Conferences of Adult Education are international and national events with theoretical sessions supported by well known theoreticians in adult education and open discussion among stakeholders (workshops, focus groups etc.)

2. Wstęp

The Romanian Institute for Adult Education (IREA) was funded in March 2000 out of the initiative of the West University of Timisoara (UVT), of The Social Romanian Institute Banat – Crisana (ISRBC) and of the German Institute for Adult Education (DIE), also funding members of IREA institute.

IREA was established as a non-profit institution, as a pedagogic research institute in the field of adult and continuing education, aiming to provide scientific and methodological support for all adult education institutions in Romania and to establish the link between the academics and practitioners in adult learning area. Although it is an independent research unit, IREA belongs to the Department of Education Sciences, Faculty of Sociology and Psychology, West University of Timisoara.
  
Consistent with its mission to support scientific and methodological activities in adult education and to create links between theory and practice in this area, IREA proposes a common framework for discussion and debate in adult education through a series of national conferences started in 2001.

IREA organized 3 National Conferences of Adult Education so far. Although the events are included in the series of national events, these Conferences have international participation, together with experts from Europe. They are focused on comparing the achievements of the Romanian continuing adult education in relation to developments at European level, reflecting about what was done or not, the way it was done and why. Based on the conclusions and "lessons learned" the participants may reflect on what to do in the next period. 

3. Zasięg regionalny

This is an initiative implemented in Romania. The events are organized in the West development region, but with a national and international participation.

 

4. Cele

The international events proposed and organized by IREA are “review and future prospects'' type and aim to facilitate analysis of the progress achieved and to identify objectives and modalities for the coming years in the field of adult education and training in Romania, in line with European trends and developments.

5. Plan działania

IREA gathers information on the progress since the last meeting and prepares research materials to be discussed upon. The participants can also submit their materials (such as studies, articles etc.). The Conference is attended by renowned people in the area of adult education, such as representatives of the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sport; Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Protection; Ministry of Culture, Religious Affairs and National Heritage; adult training providers; researchers; academics; theorists and practitioners in public and private sector organizations; professional associations; cultural or vocational training centres etc. 

6. Zastosowanie i wykonanie

The participants share their complementary perspectives on the experiences, issues and current level of the discussed topics across Europe.

Discussions at the most recent Conference (2010) focused on best practices in the assessment, recognition, validation and accreditation/ certification of skills acquired through informal and non-formal, in terms of aspects to be improved to increase the credibility of this form of certification, to improve the quality of evaluation. The aim was to see how the validation once achieved can be integrated effectively to encourage adult participation in lifelong learning, once acknowledged the benefits of learning and easy access to different training paths.

7. Rezultaty i korzyści

These initiatives have no tangible results, except for the materials prepared for the discussions, but they represent a great opportunity for experience and information exchange.

Financial resources can be a problem when organizing such events.

9. Możliwość przeniesienia i powtórzenia

The initiative has not yet been replicated but it is fully adjustable to all sorts of beneficiaries.

10. Wnioski

The success of the initiative is given by the national need to discuss upon the proposed topics. Major stakeholders are very much interested to be up to date with the international and especially European perspectives and trends, in order to align their strategies in accordance to most recent information.
